Professional psychological services in Johannesburg

Beginning therapy for the first time or starting with a new therapist can feel extremely daunting and intimidating, but I believe it is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself. I believe that the benefit of therapy is having an effective, safe and comforting space where you are encouraged to actually have the conversations about yourself, relationships, and experiences which may be difficult to do alone.

About me

My name is Joshua and I am a registered clinical psychologist (community service) with the HPCSA. I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (with honours) at the University of the Witwatersrand and my Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Johannesburg.

I believe therapy is a collaborative process where the patient and the therapist work together to think about and make meaning of emotional, relational and psychological difficulties you encounter. The end goal being to move towards new and more authentic and effective ways of being. I also believe a therapist's role is to provide support and valuable information on mental health to those in need or seeking guidance, and also to advocate for those in need.

Professional experience

I have practical experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in various public health settings such as Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital, the Tara Child Clinic. In these settings I was able to collaborate with talented allied mental health teams of psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, dietitians, occupational therapists, and fellow psychologists. These experiences have enriched and equipped me with strong foundations in culturally and contextually appropriate clinical and psychotherapeutic practices for inpatient and outpatients, as well as proficiency in assessment and clinical diagnosis as well as experience in multidisciplinary and peer consultation, along with a thorough understanding of the ethics governing good practice for client and patient care.

Individual psychotherapy

I provide short and extended relational psychodynamic therapy for adolescents and adults. This approach is rooted in gaining insight, fostering self-reflection, noticing and changing patterns in relationships, and enhancing understanding of the root causes of one's challenges and the dynamics which perpetuate them. The objective is to translate this awareness into the ability to experience present and future difficulties more authentically and effectively. Individual therapy aims to help equip patients with more tools and insight so that they do not always rely on their default way of dealing with crises and difficult situations.I hope to create secure and safe spaces that encourage the navigation, expression and processing of distressing or sensitive past or present experiences and emotions. In addition, I incorporate more structured Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) methods when appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need to see a psychologist?

If you're experiencing persistent emotional distress, struggling with relationships, facing major life changes, or noticing a decline in your overall well-being, then it might be beneficial to consult with a psychologist. We provide support and strategies to navigate various challenges.

What can I expect during the first therapy session?

The first session usually involves an introduction, discussion of confidentiality, and an exploration of your reasons for seeking therapy. We aim to create a comfortable environment, and you'll have the opportunity to share your concerns and goals. It's a collaborative process to determine the best approach for your unique situation.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychologists primarily focus on psychotherapy and counseling, utilising talk therapy to address psychological, emotional and behavioral issues. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, are a subspeciality of medical doctors who can prescribe medications and often work in conjunction with us for a comprehensive approach to mental health.

How do I make an appointment?

You can book an appointment by contacting me via WhatsApp, email or by filling in the form for me to contact you. There will be forms for you to read and complete before the first appointment.

How long does therapy typically last?

The duration of therapy varies based on individual needs and the nature of the issues being addressed. Some people benefit from short-term interventions, while others may find long-term therapy more beneficial. It's a collaborative process, and the duration is often reassessed as therapy progresses.

Are online services offered?

Yes, they are. You will need a smartphone, laptop or computer with a camera and microphone; a secure and stable internet connection; and a quiet space or room so sessions won't be interrupted.

How long is each therapy session?

Each therapy session will typically last for 50 minutes.
